Keeping the Lights on Afterschool
Every October, out-of-school time programs around the country and across Maine participate in Lights On Afterschool — the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. Launched in October 2000 with celebrations in 1,200 communities nationwide, Lights On Afterschool has grown into a powerful annual moment of recognition for the out-of-school time field.
During Lights On Afterschool, programs open their doors to parents, community members, local leaders, and elected officials — inviting them to see firsthand what quality out-of-school time looks like in action. Open houses, student showcases, rallies, and community events shine a spotlight on the educators, youth workers, and mentors who show up every day for Maine’s children. It is an opportunity to celebrate the field and the people who make it possible.
But Lights On Afterschool is more than a celebration. It is a reminder of what is at stake. With 113,000 Maine children unable to access the out-of-school time programs their families want for them, the lights are not yet on for everyone. Lights On Afterschool gives programs, advocates, and community members a moment to come together, amplify that message, and make the case to policymakers and funders that Maine’s children cannot wait.
